Born in Laredo, Texas he was raised in the college town of Bryan/College Station, home of Texas A&M. He received his bachelors degree from Southwest Texas State University, (now Texas State), and received his law degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston. Mr. Cortes is the son of Mexican immigrants. Therefore, he speaks fluent Spanish and is capable of simultaneous translation.
In private practice since 2004, Mr. Cortes was able to gain a varied breadth and depth of experience in a number of different areas of the law. However, his primary focus has always been Criminal Defense. Having worked as a contract public defender on the Court Appointments lists of Bexar, Montgomery, Galveston, Harris and Fort Bend counties he was able to gain an enormous amount of trial experience in a short span of time. The skill set obtained from constantly being in front of a jury has helped him in every other aspect of his law practice.
Mr. Cortes understands what it feels like to have a loved one locked up. He understands what it means to be deprived of your liberty and face an uncertain future. He understands what the Accused and their family are going through. He understands they need someone with experience to guide them through the system. Someone who is accessible. That is why all of Mr. Cortes' clients receive his personal cell phone number. But most importantly they need someone who is willing to fight for them and Mr. Cortes takes that responsibility very seriously.
